Last night, I said that four of the women were generic and similar. The most similar were Amy and Nicole. Not in singing. One was out of control and the other was too in control. But as far as looks, I had trouble telling them apart.
Not gonna be a problem any more.
I can't say I was disappointed with the women who got sent home. Yes, Antonella sang worse, but now that I know what to expect, I can just mute it next week when she sings and enjoy the visual. I wouldn't have minded terribly if it had been Alaina, but I can stomach her another week. Leslie and Hayley are not my cup of tea, but they both sang well enough and deserved to stay. I think the audience showed some judgement.
If singing is the only criteria, the final six will include five black women. I don't expect that to happen, but at this point, we can at least hope for it as a possibility. I'll tell you this... if there aren't at least four black women in the top 12, you're going to have a hard time convincing me that America is ready to elect a black President.
The men's elimination was a bit more surprising, especially Paul. Didn't see that coming at all. Rudy didn't surprise me at all (he was the only one I picked), though I think he's a decent singer. He just picked a bad song, performed it in a corny manner and had the disadvantage of going first on a long long night.
If it were all merit, it would be Sunjaya and Sundance going home. But I think a lot of people are still waiting for Sundance to recapture his early brilliance and Sunjaya is the only real young guy and he's real cute and has an interesting story. I wasn't surprised to learn that he was one of the top four vote-getters among the guys. And, if watching him sing gets me a cutaway of his gorgeous sister every week, I'll shut my ears and suffer through it. I see him making the top 12 but going early, like Chicken Little last year.
I don't usually watch the group songs, but this time I did. Of the guys who got to sing a line, only Brandon really stood out for me. He has a beautifully textured tone. I hope he doesn't always sing in that high register like he did this week. I think AJ can sing too, but the competition hasn't been kind to obviously gay guys in the past and I think he fits that description.
I don't know what annoyed me more. Chris Sleigh baiting Simon on Tuesday or apologizing for it on Thursday. Can't he just be clever-funny and represent for the big guys? We need it.
Hey... who wants to test out the new voting system? Just click on this link and take it out for a spin:
I'd love it if you were to fill out a ballot (use a phony name if you'd like). I just wanna test out the system.
